OCEAN PINES — Residents are invited to register their cars, trucks or motorcycles for a car show and cookout in support of the Breast Cancer Society to be held on Saturday, Sept. 29 in the parking lot of Walgreens off Manklin Creek Road.
"Every single penny earned on Saturday goes to charity," event organizer and Walgreens manager Tom Johnson said.
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the lot will be loaded with vehicles in contention to win the first place prize of a large engraved trophy.
A minimum donation of $10 is required to enter the contest and a vehicle is given a number once registered.
Spectators, who can attend at no cost, write the number of their favorite vehicle on a card and the champion will be selected by popular vote.
Second place will receive a $100 gift card to Carrabba’s Italian Grill and third place will earn a $50 gift basket from Advance Auto Parts.
Registration will not occur until the day of the event and Johnson said no one who wants to participate would be left out.
Business supporters of the fundraiser have donated hot dogs, chips, soda, water and more that can each be purchased with a $1 donation.
As the winners of the show will not be revealed until the end of the event, Johnson recommends those staying throughout the morning to bring games such as corn hole to provide entertainment.
According to Johnson, the executives of Walgreens encourage, but don’t require store managers to be active in community events.
Thompson said because he is into cars and car shows, it was easy for him to figure out what kind of event to organize.
About 35 cars participated in the inaugural event last year, and this year’s goal is 100.
"When I started asking around if we should hold the event again, a lot of people got excited," Johnson said. "I would be ecstatic if we had a lot of people here donating for the cause."
Of those excited is Bill Carper, one of the founders of the Ocean Pines Corvette Club. The club is only about a year and a half old, but its initial membership has jumped from 16 Corvette drivers to now 89 members.
"We all had a really nice time last year. It’s a great fundraiser and we all hope to be in contention for some prizes this year," Carper said.
