BERLIN– The town will hold its first public utility day on Saturday, May 31.
“Touch a Truck Day” features trucks and interactive demonstrations from employees of Berlin’s electric, water resources, police, fire and public works departments. The family friendly event will be held in Stephen Decatur Park on Tripoli Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“We used to do this back where I worked in Manassas,” said Electric Utility Director Tim Lawrence. “We’re a member of what’s called ‘American Public Power’ and they have what’s basically called a utility week. Normally it happens in October, but we have so many events going on during that month that we decided to do it in May.”
The electric company will hold demonstrations on setting a pole and pole-top rescues using their “Power Town” display in order to educate the public on electric safety.
“We’ll simulate what happens if a lineman gets electrocuted up on a pole, and we’ll show how we get him down and perform CPR on him,” Lawrence said. “We’re also going to have a demonstration of an overhead transformer, showing how it feeds to a house, and we’ll have a pad-mount transformer like you would see in an underground subdivision. One of our guys is going to be doing what’s called a ‘cable-locating’ demonstration, and he’s also going to be talking about how to read your electric meters.”
Some 3,700 flyers promoting Touch a Truck Day were handed out at Stephen Decatur High School, Stephen Decatur Middle School, Berlin Intermediate School and Buckingham Elementary School.
“This event is aimed at children – trying to educate them about some of the Berlin departments such as the police, public works, fire company, water resources and electric,” said Main Street Coordinator Megan Houston. “Each department will put on a demonstration using their trucks, and the kids can be hands on with these demonstrations; this event isn’t limited to kids but I think that’s who’s going to be most excited about ‘Touch a Truck.’”
A police vehicle, bucket truck, digger derrick, vacuum truck, camera truck, garbage truck and a fire rescue squad vehicle and ladder truck are all scheduled to make appearances. Public works staff will perform all of the demonstrations. Children will be allowed to operate some of the equipment with staff supervision.
“We hope everyone takes out a better understand of what Berlin employees actually do for the town of Berlin,” Lawrence said. “It’s basically a showcase of our job skills.”
The event is free and open to the public. Hamburgers, hotdogs and ice cream will be available for sale. The rain date is June 21.
