Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the construction of the new Showell Elementary School off Route 589 in Berlin continued as scheduled according to a report by the county school system’s Chief Financial Officer Vince Tolbert during the Worcester County Public Schools Board of Education teleconference meeting held on May 19. Work was being done to create a new front entrance for the school and expand the school’s playground in addition to completing the courtyard concrete paving, installation of drywall, carpet and tiles, kitchen equipment, insulation and light fixtures. Worcester County public school officials anticipated the $40-million new school would increase enrollment when it reopened for the 2020-21 academic year in September.
