On March 29, 2021, Jim aka Ike, Coach, Ghost Rider, Bluesman, found the wave of a lifetime and rode it into the sunset.

He always said, “Sometimes you just have to wait for the right wave.” After suffering complications from a stroke, the tide was right as he caught the perfect wave out.

A career law enforcement officer for over 40 years, he served with the Washington Metropolitan Police, Department of Natural Resources Police, Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s Office, and most recently the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office.

He valued his brothers and sisters in blue and the lifetime friendships born from mutual respect.

Jim loved riding his Harley. He found that the love of riding could go hand in hand with the love of serving others.

He forged close bonds with his brothers and sisters in Hogs and Heroes and Bikers Without Borders.

Jim never knew a stranger and began or ended his conversations with “my friend.”

He was always in perpetual motion, on or planning his next adventure with family and friends. Most recently, declaring that cycling in the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon was the best family trip, yet. He was excited about riding the entire Pine Creek Rail Trail of 62 miles with his son, James.

There was nothing better than a great beach day, riding the waves with his wife, Leslie.

The best end to a great beach day was to celebrate with an orange crush or a rum bucket and a little “dessert” called Fireball, many times with his Taylor’s “family.” He always talked about how great the quality of life was living here, at the beach.

Spring was especially exciting for Jim, as that was the start of the baseball season. He loved attending minor league games with friends and family, watching the Bowie Baysox and the Delmarva Shorebirds.

Cooperstown held a special place in his heart as he was able to see his son pitch a winning game at Cooperstown Dreams Park and revisit the town with his baseball loving friends in later years.

Music was part of his soul. He was a true bluesman and was on the board of directors of the Central Delaware Blues Society.

He never missed attending the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival and loved live music venues, wearing his signature bowler hat. As he left home for the final time, he was escorted by the Nighthawks rendition of “When I Go Away.”

His wife, Leslie; son, James; brother, John; sisters, Theresa, Barbara, Joan, Becky, Cathy, and Mary Jo; and step-mother, Mary Ellen, will continue to gaze into the sunset in awe of the bright new shade of “blue” that graces the sky.

Ride on…Rock on…the music is far from over…

Donations in his name can be made to nonprofits Bikers Without Borders Foundation Bishopville, Maryland; Central Delaware Blues Society; C.O.P.S. Concerns of Police Survivors; Hogs and Heroes Foundation, Inc. Chapter 8 Patriot Point (Maryland); Shriners Hospital, or a nonprofit of your choice.

His ashes will be spread in the ocean this fall, his favorite time of year at the beach. The trip to sea will be followed by his favorite time of day, Happy Hour. Date and location will be posted as soon as determined.
