The Berlin Town Council discussed the following at its June 27 meeting:

One-Day Liquor License

The council approved a special one-day permit to the Berlin Heritage Foundation and Taylor House Museum for an evening event that will serve alcohol on Aug. 14.

Councilman Jack Orris, who is a member of the foundation’s board, said a similar event in early June was “extremely successful.” The event, dubbed “Sundays at the Museum” will feature “music and fun at the Calvin B. Taylor House Museum,” according to the town’s website.

Lift station contract

The council approved a $411,937 contract to TK Construction of Salisbury for upgrading the William Street pump station to meet confined space standards. The project is part of a larger town goal to evaluate and upgrade its water infrastructure.

Mutual aid

The council approved a mutual aid agreement between the Choptank Electric Cooperative and the Town of Berlin which stipulates that the two entities would help each other should either need assistance during emergency service restoration, such as during or after a hurricane.

SHA briefing

Orris suggested that the council invite a representative from the State Highway Administration to a meeting to answer questions. He said issues he’d like more information on local projects that involve signage, crosswalks and brick inlays in crosswalks

Mayor’s report

Orris also suggested that the council bring back the mayor’s report to the council.

“It doesn’t have to be the magna carta, but just bullet points of happenings in town,” Orris said. “People are concerned about crosswalks. I wasn’t really aware until they came to me. Saw chatter on Facebook where there was information available that just hadn’t gotten to us.”

Aggressive driving

Councilwoman Shaneka Nichols suggested that more be done to curb aggressive driving in the community, especially along William Street.

She said she was nearly struck by drivers along the road multiple times before the school year let out while walking local students off the premises of Berlin Intermediate School.
