Franklin H. Lynch

Franklin H. Lynch
Berlin

It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of Franklin H. Lynch, who passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on Monday, October 19, 2026, in Berlin.

A dedicated son, brother, husband, and father, Franklin was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Paula Lynch, and is survived by daughters Sarah Lynch and Jennifer Lynch. The son of Henry Lee Lynch and Katie Holland Lynch, he was additionally preceded in death by siblings Elmer Lynch, Lloyd Lynch, David Lynch, Charles Lynch, Paul Lynch, William Lynch, Mary Lynch Cropper, Pauline Lynch Cropper and Maude Lynch Gaskins.

Franklin was born on Burley Street in Berlin on June 4, 1928. He met his wife, Paula, while they were both working at the Beach Plaza Hotel on the boardwalk in Ocean City. When they married on December 27, 1955, Franklin relocated to Baltimore to work for the Baltimore County School system while Paula finished her studies at Goucher College. In 1967 Franklin, Paula, Jenny and Sarah moved back to the Eastern Shore living in Snow Hill and Franklin began working for the Worcester County Board of Education as a supervisor.

As a life-long educator, Franklin changed the landscape of local schooling with his vision to bring independent education to Maryland’s Eastern Shore.  Through partnership, collaboration, and dedication, he was instrumental in the founding of Worcester Country School in 1970 (now Worcester Preparatory School) and served as its first Headmaster for 14 years.

Guided by his belief in the transformative power of education, he helped create a school grounded in academic excellence, personal responsibility, character, and community. In 1985, he transitioned to the school’s Development Office, where he continued to advance the mission he helped establish.

Franklin ultimately committed 36 years to the school before his retirement, serving each one alongside his wife, Paula, Worcester Prep’s long-serving Business Manager. Together, they demonstrated a deep commitment to the institution and its mission. Their combined years of service reflect a shared belief in the importance of education and the enduring strength of community. They formed a partnership that lasted in family and work throughout their lives.

As a friend and colleague, Franklin brought a big personality and genuine sincerity to all he did.  His kindness and dependability were matched only by his warm smile and infectious laugh. Franklin will be missed by all who knew and loved him, but leaves behind a lasting legacy rooted in commitment to family, education, and generations of students who will benefit from his impact.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 4 p.m., at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Berlin. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will immediately follow at St. Paul’s Episcopal Churchyard. Funeral arrangements are in the care of Burbage Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Worcester Preparatory School, 508 South Main Street, Berlin, Md. 21811.
