Berlin’s Bungalow Love will change ownership this June

(May 4, 2017) As of June 1, Bungalow Love on 9 South Main Street in Downtown Berlin will be under new ownership.
Current owner Heather Layton confirmed last Thursday that Tracy Bell, who had operated Snapdragon in West Ocean City, will take over the shop.
“She purchased Bungalow Love and the brand, so the business will stay, [but] she will take over,” Layton said last Thursday. “Tracy purchased everything. So, literally, I’m leaving and she’s coming in the next day.”
Layton said she would spend more time with her children. She will also continue to chair the Berlin Arts & Entertainment Committee and to provide private, in-home terrarium classes.
“I have a couple-dozen booked this summer,” she said. “I pack everything up and go to people’s homes and set up for them and their friends to plant terrariums. I’m getting requests daily for those at the moment.
“I will still have a terrarium and living wreath booth set up at the Peach Festival and I’ll be at the Ocean Pines farmers market most Saturdays,” Layton continued. “I’ll also be selling the fair trade Guatemalan goods online. I am the direct importer for them, so I’m becoming the actual distributor of them.”
Layton will operate under the label “Gypsea Tide” as of June 1.
Bungalow Love opened in 2009 on William Street and moved to Main Street in 2015.
“When I first opened Bungalow Love, it was because I crafted jewelry and refinished furniture with chalk paint,” Layton said. “Since I’ve opened, I have become so busy with the storefront that I simply don’t have time to create anymore.
“I have several customers that commission me on a regular basis to paint and distress their pieces for them. I make my own chalk paint … they like that they can choose custom colors,” Layton said. “I don’t even know the last time I had time to sit down create jewelry. I’m not complaining. It’s all good stuff. I’m busy. The shop’s busy. Family life is busy. I’m pulled in so many directions and at this point in my life, I choose family first.”
Layton said she would miss being on Main Street and chatting with friends and customers each day.
“From day one, I have been truly grateful for absolutely everyone who has walked through my front door. I am over-the-moon excited to have time to work leisurely in the vegetable garden, not have to rush off the beach with my kids to get to work and cook meals for my family that don’t involve the crockpot.”
Bell said she is eager to become part of the Berlin community and plans to continue on the path that Layton started, offering locally made and fair trade goods.
She’ll also put her own spin on the eclectic shop.
“I plan to stay true to the spirit of Bungalow Love that Heather has worked so hard to build,” she said. “I’ll be adding my sterling and mixed-metal jewelry along with the made-in-America lines I carried at Snapdragon,” she said.
