Pam Howard to feature at Baked during 2nd Friday

(Sept. 7, 2017) Baked Dessert Café owner Robin Tomaselli did not have to look far to find an artist to show work during the 2nd Friday art stroll this week.
Her sister, Pam Howard, will display her pottery, and Tomaselli said she is a huge fan of her work.
“Robin was like, ‘Come on over.’ I was like, ‘I’m not that good!’” Howard said with a laugh. “She said, ‘yes you are!’ So, I’m kind of a reluctant participant.”
Howard said pottery started as a hobby. By day, she runs Ad Options Inc., a company that, among other things, designs all the promotional products for Baked Dessert. She learned how to make pottery at an adult-education class at her church in 2011.
“I’ve always loved art,” Howard said. “I started doing pottery for the Empty Bowls to benefit the homeless shelter [in Calvert County] with a group at my church called the Shepherd’s Hands Potters. I started making bowls and then it became kind of a social event with all the people that throw [pottery].”
Some of her pots are built exclusively by hand, while others are turned on a potter’s wheel. All of them are made from speckled clay at a small studio inside her church.
Howard has also been learning other media.
“I took a blacksmithing and forging class in Pennsylvania with one of the ladies from the studio as well. That was a lot of fun,” she said. “And I recently started glass blowing too!”
The pottery group meets once a week, and it wasn’t long before Howard produced an impressive body of work.
In Berlin, Howard will display her pottery, with proceeds of any sales benefiting the Berlin Arts & Entertainment Committee. Tomaselli regularly displays and sells her sister’s work.
“I’m bringing bowls and casserole dishes, plates and a couple of vases,” she said. “I was kind of surprised when Robin said, ‘Hey, you need to bring more stuff – the stuff I have is gone.’”
Baked Dessert Café is on 4 Bay Street, next to Berlin Town Hall.
Berlin’s 2nd Friday festivities will feature more than a dozen art displays in shops throughout the downtown area, along with sales and specials in restaurants from 5-8 p.m.
