Pines collecting for hurricane relief

(Sept. 7, 2017) Hurricane Harvey left destruction in its wake after it spawned deadly flooding along the Gulf Coast.
The aftermath is devastating. Families are displaced. Homes are destroyed. Lives are forever changed. The road to recovery for the gulf region appears to be a long road.
With that in mind, the Ocean Pines Association decided to help the relief efforts for the flood victims in Texas.
The association, with the help of its employees and board of directors, is starting a disaster relief effort to provide nonperishable food items, bottled water, baby supplies, pet supplies and more to the victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas.
“Our thoughts are with the people of Texas,” Ocean Pines Marketing and Public Relations Director Denise Sawyer said. “Let’s come together as a community and contribute to the many victims and agencies that came to the aid of displaced families following Hurricane Harvey.”
The collection effort started on Tuesday, Sept. 5 will run through Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 5 p.m.
Drop-off points include the Ocean Pines Community Center at 235 Ocean Parkway, Public Works at 1 Firehouse Lane, Sports Core Pool at 11144 Cathell Road and the Administration Building, including the Police Department, at 239 Ocean Parkway.
Alternatively, officers with the Ocean Pines Police Department will pick up items residents wish to donate. To schedule a four-hour pick-up window, call 410-641-7747.
Suggested items are: powdered drink mixes like Crystal Light, Gatorade, coffee, granola bars, crackers, energy bars, nonperishable microwaveable food, canned fruit and nuts, games and playing cards, mops, brooms, Lysol, dog and cat food, pet treats, cat litter and books.
Other needed items are toiletries, like toilet tissue, Tums, toothpaste and toothbrushes, hand sanitizers, hand towels, emery boards, nail clippers, foot powder, talcum powder, body lotion, ChapStick, deodorant, diapers, baby bottles, baby food and baby formula. Do not donate liquids or perishable items.
Barbely’s Transport from Newark, Maryland has volunteered to drive the supplies to a designated location in Texas. Martin Fish Company of Ocean City, Sysco of Pocomoke City, ABC printers of West Ocean City and Magee Farms of Selbyville have donated the shipping and collection boxes.
The goal is to raise enough items to provide a tractor trailer load of organized relief for Irving Cares, an emergency assistance nonprofit organization and shelter for displaced families in Texas.
