Open Paint and Community Pot Luck, Saturday in Berlin

(Sept. 14, 2017) Organizers on Monday finalized plans for an “Open Paint and Community Potluck,” Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Germantown School Community Heritage Center on 10223 Trappe Road in Berlin.
The event, which will take place from 4-7 p.m., will include food and live gospel music by a local church choir, as well as the chance to lay paint on canvas for a permanent community mural that will be hung on the Berlin Welcome Center on Main Street.
“I’m looking forward to a great, exciting afternoon – a great gathering. I just like to see the yard filled,” Barbara Purnell said. “I’ve talked to everybody that I’ve come in contact with. I’ve called, I’ve met, I’ve announced, I’ve passed out flyers and I’m looking for a great event.”
Purnell, who oversees the Germantown School, admitted the event would have to compete with a number of others occurring in the community at roughly the same time.
“You don’t hear any of this when you’re planning,” she said with a laugh. “But when things start to happen, everything comes out of the woodwork.”
Still, she said she was hopeful the event at the old Germantown School would bring a crowd.
“I’m excited,” she said. “I just think it’s a great thing and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone.”
Purnell underscored the importance of bringing together community icons like the Germantown School and the Calvin B. Taylor House Museum.
An open paint was held at the Taylor House Museum during the Peach Festival in August, and the mural panel produced during that event will be hung at Germantown. Both events, in effect, create a sort of exchange program between the two historical sites.
“It’s all Berlin history,” Purnell said. “I definitely think we should come together and know each other’s history. It’s important.”
Robin Tomaselli, from the Berlin Arts and Entertainment Committee, said the event was an opportunity to “literally be a part of a community mural.”
“The mural artist will be here, everyone can paint on the mural and it’s a chance to break bread as a community,” she said. “The food is free, but the idea is for everyone to bring a dish to share. It’s a community dinner, so bring a dish to share and blankets and chairs, and be ready to have a great time in a wonderful setting.”
A rain date was set for next Sunday, Sept. 24.
