‘Antique Capital’ hosts Road Show

(June 11, 2015) Bill Outten, who operates three antique stores in Berlin, held Berlin’s first Antique Art Mart in April in the parking lot of Uptown Antiques.
Outten will stage a similar event this Saturday, an Antiques Road Show or sorts, in cooperation with the Atlantic Hotel.
These events, Outten said, typify the fact that Berlin is truly “the antique capital of the Eastern Shore.”
“The road show is where we have an antique appraiser come in and they evaluate people’s treasurers and give them a fair market value for it,” he said.
Charlene Upham and her husband, Steve Blumenauer, who run an appraisal business in Mardela Springs, offered a similar service during the art mart in April. Proceeds from the event went to Berlin Main Street.
“That went really well,” Outten said. “We actually had an overflow of people, and [Upham] only had about five minutes of rest that whole time – she worked for four hours straight.”
Upham will return on Saturday for the road show, which will be held as part of the Atlantic Hotel’s year-long 120th anniversary celebration.
“They’re celebrating and they wanted to hook up with some of the merchants and see what we could do, so this was one of those things,” Outten said. “It should be a great event.”
Outten said customers can browse several vendor booths, including area shops Bruder Hill and Uncle Jon’s Soap & Sundries, while waiting to have their items appraised.
“It’s part of the celebration of the Atlantic Hotel’s 120th anniversary, but in my perspective it’s also in conjunction with the ‘antique capital of the Eastern Shore,’” Outten said. “This is just another one of those examples of the antique capital being right here. You can come here and either spend the whole day here or blaze your trail outward. We have lots of cool shops and restaurants, and we’re trying to put all of the flavors of Berlin in this little event.”
The Antique Road Show runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. outside the Atlantic Hotel on 2 North Main Street. For more information, call 410-973-2054.
