Alice JoAnn Unger, age 83, passed away on August 15, 2026, in Berlin, Maryland. Born on April 21, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Flaxcomb and Alice (Kramer) Flaxcomb.

While JoAnn enjoyed a long career in the health insurance field, she found her true purpose in civic duty. She discovered it to be both rewarding and fulfilling in assisting the Mayors of Berlin and the town of Berlin in achieving their objectives. She truly appreciated the people she worked with and formed long lasting friendships with so many. Personally, she took great pride in always being put together from hair and makeup to “just the right amount of jewelry” as well as exercising and staying in shape.

While maintaining an air of dignity, she was thrilled to enjoy a well poured Guinness and unafraid to sing quite loudly, her favorite Irish music. She created purposeful time to be spent with friends, coworkers, her Ya-Ya’s and family. She was steadfast and walked proudly in her faith and in the end, was an example of what we all strive to be, as she moto’d “works in progress”.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Sherry Palmer and Patricia Liquefatto. JoAnn is survived by her son Christopher and his fiance Patty, with whom she resided, and her son Mark. In addition, she leaves behind her grandchildren – Blake Unger, Travis Unger (Sharmila), Patrick Unger (Kara), and Noah Unger; and her bonus grandchildren – Brynn Latchum and Keegan Latchum.

JoAnn’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Coastal Hospice for the exceptional care, empathy and graciousness shown to mom. Shonda was a light in mom’s darkest times and we are forever indebted.
