Army band to play four, free area concerts

BERLIN– The 229th Army Band will play four free outdoor concerts in Worcester County this week.
“The Adjutant General’s Own” will perform at Byrd Park in Snow Hill at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, at Stephen Decatur Park in Berlin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, at the Ocean Pines Gazebo at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 17 and at Cypress Park in Pocomoke at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 18.
Army bands provide patriotic music with the goal of inspiring citizens and soldiers, and promoting national interests at home and abroad.
Formerly known as the 29th Infantry Division Band, the 229th has roots dating back to the Ardennes Forest of France during WWI and the beaches of Normandy during WWII.
Deputy Town Administrator Mary Bohlen said Army Band shows are generally well-received in Berlin.
“People really enjoy it,” she said. “Everybody likes a free show and a free concert by as talented musicians as these always are. They’re always appreciated.
“We’re hoping for good weather so people can just bring their own lawn chairs or picnic blankets, and if they want to bring a picnic dinner that’s fine,” Bohlen continued. “It’s just a nice family evening.”
