Arts on the River and Cinco de Mayo, Friday

(May 4, 2017) Celebrate two festive occasions tomorrow in Snow Hill as this month’s Arts on the River First Friday just so happens to coincide with Cinco de Mayo.
Recognizing the unique opportunity, Kate Patton, Lower Shore Land Trust (LSLT) executive director, said her organization opted to incorporate the larger holiday into the local festivities.
“We decided let’s have a First Friday Cinco de Mayo party … so we can build on the number of people who are already coming to town for First Friday.”
In the spirit of the occasion, Patton said LSLT would be selling margaritas and fajitas, as well as suds from Dogfish Head Brewery.
Providing musical accompaniment will be The Larks, who Patton said, weather permitting, would perform riverside outside the LSLT office at 100 River Street.
Based in Salisbury, The Larks lineup includes Snow Hill High School Band Director Matt Haelig on trombone and alto saxophone.
“This time we have an opportunity to draw people down to the river and to the music,” Patton said. “The town has backup space at the Old Firehouse [on 210 West Green Street] if the weather’s not going to cooperate.”
Patton said First Friday attendees would get a sneak peak at the LSLT’s Pollinator Festival and 10th annual Native Plant Sale, which takes place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Friday is a great chance to come out and see what plants we have,” she said. “If you can’t come Saturday you can still purchase plants Friday night.”
Other establishments embracing the Cinco de Mayo theme include Harvest Moon Tavern, on 208 West Green Street, and the Blue Dog Café, on 300 North Washington Street, which will both have Cinco de Mayo themed drink and food specials.
First Friday will kick off with a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony at Toy Town Antiques, on 207 North Washington Street, from 5-9 p.m. The community is invited to join Mayor Charlie Dorman and members of the Snow Hill Chamber of Commerce for the ribbon cutting at 5 p.m., to be followed by light refreshments.
Another new Snow Hill business, ReTag’d Upscale Resale at 108 Pearl Street, will also have a grand opening celebration. Both establishments had soft openings during April’s First Friday event.
Bishop’s Stock Fine Art, Craft & Wine, on 202 West Green Street, will follow up on last month’s Paint Snow Hill event by hosting a plein air art show featuring works by Meg Walsh, among others. Patrons can also enjoy a taste of Australian wine, as May Wine Club wines will be featured.
The Jim Adcock Studio in the John Blair House, on 106 East Green Street, will feature new paintings by Jim Adcock and have Bruce Lukoskie playing guitar.
With Mother’s Day right around the corner on May 14, the First Friday event provides an ideal opportunity to score that perfect gift for mom.
The Flower Shop, on 218 North Washington Street, is offering a 15 percent discount on all Mother’s Day orders placed during the First Friday event. For more information call 410-632-2477.
If mom enjoys working the backyard barbecue, the Corner Shoppe, on 100 West Green Street, will be knocking 25 percent off the price of grilling accessories and will also feature new beer bread kits.
To take care of mom’s sweet tooth the Olde Town Candy Company, on 102 West Green Street, will feature Chesapeake Bay Farms Milkshakes and sweet treats for Mothers’ Day.
Sassy Boutique, on 14 West Green Street, will feature Mother’s Day gifts, including handbags and jewelry, among other offerings.
The Pocomoke River Canoe Company, on 2 River Street, will host a meet and greet with outdoor writer Jim Duffy. The author will be available to sign copies of his recent volume, “Eastern Shore Road Trips,” which will be available for purchase. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served.
Jerry’s Wood Craft at 112 West Green Street will feature piano playing by Rachel with Sound Start Piano. Anyone interested in taking piano lessons, from toddlers to adults, can stop by between 5:30-7 p.m. to learn more.
If guitars and vocals are your preference, local troubadour Nick Haglich will preform at Green Pearl Contemporary Fine Art, on 114 Pearl Street, from 5-8 p.m. Green Pearl will also feature a humorous-themed art show by Paul Volker, “How To Look Like An Artist.”
Other musical entertainment includes Opposite Directions at Harvest Moon Tavern from 7-10 p.m.
The Blue Dog Café will have WW Tunes and Todd Crosby performing from 6:30-10:30 p.m.
First Friday in Snow Hill sponsors include: Arts on the River, Snow Hill’s Arts & Entertainment District, the Worcester County Arts Council, Maryland State Arts Council and the Town of Snow Hill.
For her part, Patton is glad the Cinco de Mayo co-holiday has been embraced for the event.
“It’s an interesting way for people to explore Snow Hill,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity to have a party.”
