Bark For Life to raise funds for cancer society

(Nov. 12, 2015) Coupling with the 2nd Friday Art Stroll in Berlin, Bark For Life will bring cancer survivors, supporters and their four-legged friends to Worcester County to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.
“We thought joining the two events would give us a bit more reach since this is our first year,” said Sara Sabia, an event organizer.
The offshoot of Relay for Life begins at the firehouse on Main Street with registration at 5 p.m. on Friday. It follows the art stroll route, is one-mile long and local businesses are stops along the way. There will be silent auction baskets available to bid on as well.
“Instead of the traditional Relay for Life, this brings in our canine companions, who often times may be our biggest comforts during times of duress like the process of going through cancer treatments,” Sabia said. “This is a shorter walk and brings families and the community in on raising awareness.”
All funds raised will go to the American Cancer Society and organizers have set their goal at $3,500 this year.
“This is the first year it is being hosted in Worcester County,” Sabia said. “The cancer society was looking to extend the awareness.”
Organizers prefer participants to pre-register, although registration will take place on site at 5 p.m. The event will last two hours and costs $10 for an owner and their dog.
“This disease can be devastating and anything we can do to assist in finding a cure is necessary,” Sabia said. “We look forward to seeing everyone and having the success of this year bring an even larger event to Berlin next year.”
