Berlin ‘Just Walk’ features free health screenings, Sat.

(Nov. 12, 2015) Berlin’s annual Just Walk returns this Saturday, with new additions to the event, including expanded offerings for children and more health screenings via a partnership with the Worcester County Health Department.
Registration for the fourth annual walk will begin at 9 a.m. at Stephen Decatur Park in Berlin. Participants can take a two-mile walk around the park or go a longer route than runs through downtown Berlin.
For children, the event will feature an area with a bounce house and other activities.
Free health screenings will be offered from 10-11:30 a.m., sponsored by the health department and Atlantic General Hospital.
Vernon Powell will provide free shoe fittings during the event, and all participating walkers will be entered for the chance to win several door prizes, including a FitBit.
Pre-registration is encouraged. For more information or to pre-register, call the health department at 410-632-0056 or visit www.worcesterhealth.org.
Also during the event, the town will launch its new walking initiative as part of the recent Healthy Eating, Active Living (HEAL) Community designation.
“Residents asked for more recreational activities during our strategic planning and the walking initiatives fit into our recent Healthy Eating, Active Living designation as well,” Berlin Mayor Gee Williams said. “We hope participants will meet new people and make new friends during these activities.”
According to a press release issued by the town last week, the initiative hopes to organize “groups of people with similar interests getting together on a regular basis to walk” without requiring forms or fees to participate.
“If you are new to the area, but interested in being part of a team, or just let us know what your interests may be and we’ll try to put you in touch with a group,” said Mary Bohlen, administrative services director and liaison with the Berlin Parks Commission. “Someone from each team will be asked to be a team captain. We need nothing more than a contact person for others interested in joining.”
For more information on the initiative, call Bohlen at 410-641-4314 or email mbohlen@berlinmd.gov.
