Berlin A&E Committee to host last maker’s market of 2016

(Sept. 8, 2016) In yet another sign that summer is winding down, the final Maker’s Market of the year will take place this Friday in Berlin.
Sponsored by the Berlin Arts & Entertainment Committee, the monthly outdoor marketplace has run for several months in conjunction with the 2nd Friday art stroll, and is set up on the corner of Jefferson and Main streets running southwest towards the Worcester County Arts Council building.
A&E Chairwoman Heather Layton said the Maker’s Market, which is made up of artists, artisans and nonprofit organizations, had a successful first year.
“Everyone seems to be super excited about it and it’s been really well received,” Layton said. “People definitely like that it’s kind of centralized; they’re still strolling and visiting all the shops, but as far as having all the artists set up in one location, it just makes sense to everyone.”
This month, Wooden Octopus gallery, artisans from Returning Tide and jewelers Rae Smith (of Honeysuckle Silver) and Caroline Forester (of CFD Fine Jewelry and Berlin Printery) will participate, Layton said.
“The exposure has been wonderful,” Forester said. “I love talking to the people of Berlin, whether they are residents or visitors, about the work we do, made right here in this town.
“Whether I’m telling them about my handmade jewelry, inspired by our local shores, or the Berlin Printery’s 100-year-old printing presses, the Maker’s Market has really been a great way for us to easily communicate our story with our town,” she added. “Everyone has been so supportive, I could not ask for a better community of artists.”
Each month’s event also has a “kid’s zone,” where representatives from local nonprofits volunteer to provide free, creative activities for children.
Layton said the Maker’s Market would return next year and run May through September.
In other committee news, the Town of Berlin recently granted a space in its visitor’s center, on 14 South Main Street, to Berlin Arts & Entertainment. The committee will use the space as an information hub and a meeting space.
“It’s exciting to have a central location – and we are part of the town after all,” Layton said. “As of right now, people have to kind of flag us down at my shop or Baked Dessert or Salt Water Media. Now we’ll have a central location to meet with artisans, and we’re going to have information outside of our office if someone wants a registration form, and we’re going to have additional information during normal visitor’s center hours.”
Layton said the committee would start setting up this week. The office will not be staffed.
The committee also recently held what Layton said was a successful fundraiser at Burley Oak Brewing Company, bringing about $2,500, on Aug. 29.
Along with guest bartenders – artists John Donato and Kate Cashman, and Ray Layton and Kenny “Cupcake” Tomaselli – the event included a Chinese and silent auction.
Blacksmith restaurant, Siculi Italian Kitchen and Baked Dessert Café donated food. Silent auction items were donated by Donato, Cashman, Patrick Henry, Patti Backer, Dawn Tarr, Atlantic Retreat, Francis Scott Key Family Resort, Waterman’s Seafood Company, Cheers, Crush N Crab, Zenna Wellness Studio, Harmony Wellness, Mark Huey Photography, Bungalow Love, Baked Desserts Café and Burley Oak.
“It was a great turnout,” Layton said. “People were excited and we had some really great donations to the auctions.”
During the fundraiser, the full house also raised glasses for A&E Committee members Stephanie Fowler and Patty Gregorio. The Salt Water Media owners were injured last month in Ocean City when a scooter failed to stop at a red light and struck them at a crosswalk.
