Berlin makes top 25 in Main Street contest

(May 4, 2017) The Town of Berlin has passed the first test and moved onto the quarterfinal round of the Independent We Stand “America’s Main Streets” contest.
Twenty-five towns from a pool of more than 100, advanced to the second round of the competition to win $25,000.
“We’re very excited to be in the top 25. Of course, we think we’re number one,” Town Administrator Laura Allen said on Monday. ”We should know for sure what’s going to happen by the first week or two in June. Everybody should keep voting because we’re not across the finish line yet.”
The quarterfinal round of the contest runs from May 1 to May 28. A panel of judges will rate the top-10 semifinalists and select a winner on June 5.
If the town wins, Berlin Economic and Community Development Director Ivy Wells said in March that she would invest the winnings in the Main Street program.
“Plus, we would, hopefully, have a little bit of money set aside for a nice, celebratory party at the end,” she said. “It’s Berlin. There’s always a reason to have a party.”
Sharon Timmons, administrative assistance in the economic development office, said it was important to keep the effort going. Anyone with a computer or a smartphone can vote once each day.
“We’re excited to make the top 25 for America’s Best Main Street. Keep voting every day and hopefully we’ll have some good news by the end of June,” Timmons said.
