(April 16, 2015) One of the few remaining empty spaces on the revitalized Berlin Main Street has been filled, Economic and Community Development Director Ivy Wells announced this week.
Wells reported the sale of the former Mid Atlantic Pain Medicine building on 6 South Main Street during a mayor and council meeting on Monday evening.
Salisbury residents Foster and Lisa Schoch bought the building from Tom Rosenthal, who now operates Pain Medicine exclusively in Salisbury.
Cam Bunting of Bunting Realty in Berlin brokered the deal, which closed on Monday.
“It will eventually become an art gallery,” Wells told the council. “I’m meeting with [the new owners] on Thursday.”
“It’s an ideal place for an art gallery,” Mayor Gee Williams said during the meeting.
Wells told the Bayside Gazette on Tuesday that many area residents had complained about the lingering downtown “eyesore.”
“It was definitely on my radar,” she said. “Considering that we just reapplied for an Arts and Entertainment District re-designation, this opens up the door for other artists who were thinking about possibly coming here and opening a gallery, or having a place to display their art. I think it helps them out tremendously and it makes Berlin more of an arts destination as well.”
The new owners were unavailable for comment, although Wells said they would likely “do some minor cleanup to the exterior of the building” and attempt to have the space open this summer.
“Eventually they will be redoing the façade of the building,” Wells said.
For Wells, who recently helped to finalize a deal to bring a new restaurant to the site of the former Boomer’s on the corner of South Main Street and Route 113, it’s another success during her first three months on the job.
“My job’s going to be done here soon and I’m just going to pack my stuff and move on,” Wells joked. “I still have plenty of land that needs to get developed and I still have lots of goals, but it’s really nice during my first three months here to get this much accomplished.”
Wells also teased that a public art project sponsored by the town could be “coming down the pike later this summer.”
