Berlin’s ‘eclectic mix of everything’ expands offerings

(Aug. 4, 2016) Opened in October, Berlin’s Urban Nectar continues to expand its offerings, from housing the new bakery/record store “Swell,” to hosting a rotating series of events.
Currently, Urban Nectar runs a Paint Night on Tuesdays, along with a series of classes that range from cooking to soap making.
Bingo nights are in consideration, and other events have run the gamut from open mic music and poetry, to demonstrations on acupuncture.
The main part of the store sells mostly prepackaged food and local art and artisan items, while a large adjacent room sells furniture from Hunt and Lane, clothing from a boutique in Chincoteague, and a book nook carrying vintage paperbacks.
Owner Shanen Cute said a rotating cast of “about 105 local artists” also contributes items to the store on a consignment basis, while most of the antiques in the store come from her private collection.
“It’s like an eclectic mix of everything,” Cute said. “It’s classes, a kitchen, food, coffee, music. Anything anybody wants to take a class in, I want an instructor here to teach something.”
On Sundays from noon to 3 p.m. an “artisan’s co-op” runs behind the store, covering a wide range of interests.
“There is always someone making jewelry outside, bottle-feeding baby goats, there’s a wood spinner, a girl painting and I do produce and stuff too,” Cute said.
