SNOW HILL– The Worcester County Commission on Aging will host its sixth annual car show on Saturday, May 10.
The show, which benefits senior programs, will be held at the Charles and Martha Fulton Senior Center on 4767 Snow Hill Road.
Lloyd Parks, chairman of the board of directors at the senior center, helped launch the show six years ago.
“He’s had old cars himself and gone to car shows, and he thought it would make money for the senior center and kind of advertise our senior center. We want people to know we’re here,” said wife Linda Parks, coordinator of the senior center.
Linda said the show has gone over “really well – even in the years it has rained.”
“Last year it rained and we still made $5,600,” she said.
Between 130 and 150 cars are expected to take part in this year’s show.
“You name it and we’ve had it in our show,” Lloyd said. “We’ve had ’57 Chevys, ’56 Ford Fairlanes and ’63 Impalas. The best in show one year was an original fuel-injected ’63 Corvette. It’s even open to imports if they want to come.”
Last year the show even saw a troop carrier from the Vietnam era complete with a machine gun mount.
Judging consists of 10 points each for exterior, interior and “under the hood.” Vehiciles will be judged in several categories.
“We try to be fair,” Lloyd said. “A lot of the shows these days go around and pick their friends. With our show if you come here and you don’t know anybody it really doesn’t matter because you can still win a trophy.”
Along with the six-foot trophy given out for best in show, the chamber of commerce, senior attendees, county commissioners and the senior center board of directors will all hand out awards.
Pulled pork barbecue, hot dogs, coleslaw, chips, desserts and drinks will be available for sale, and a silent auction will benefit the senior center.
The first 80 cars will receive a free photo of their automobile courtesy of WM. Gerald Hasty, Sr.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and judging begins at 11:30 a.m. Registration is $12 per vehicle. Trophy presentation begins at 3 p.m.
Every dollar raised at the show will benefit the senior center.
