Date set for Blessing of Combines

(May 5, 2016) The 18th annual Blessing of the Combines will take over downtown Snow Hill on Aug. 6, beginning at 11 a.m.
The day will start with the parade of combines, when farmers bring their equipment down Green Street amid an audience of about 2,000 spectators.
“The Parade of Combines sets off down Route 12 to Green Street at 11:15. A “throttle thrust” will signal Master of Ceremonies Steve Hales to begin the program with the presentation of colors by the award-winning Snow Hill High School Junior Marine Corps ROTC,” Becky Payne, organizer, said.
Once the parade is complete, a member of the clergy will provide the blessing, and a guest speaker to be determined will make remarks.
From there, the festival part of the day begins, featuring local musicians and headlining act The Michael Christopher Band.
After the invocation, there will still be plenty of family activities, like a petting zoo, face paintings and a showcase of antique tractors and mowers. Food and craft vendors will line Bank Street.
“We’ve got quite a few church groups doing bake sales and vendors selling food — there will be plenty to eat and drink,” vendor coordinator Diana Nolte said. “A lot of our local museums and non-profits will have tables to create a ‘museum alley.’”
In addition, Nolte said, crafts like jewelry and home décor items will also be available.
From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Sturgis Park, a stone’s throw from Green Street on the banks of the Pocomoke River, classic and restored automobiles will be on display.
Outside of town along southbound 113 at the Snow Hill Auto Body shop, a garden tractor pull will take place at 3 p.m.
For those willing to make a day of it, later that night at 7 p.m. Furnace Town, located off Old Furnace Road north of Snow Hill from Route 12 will offer “Dancing under the Stars” until 11 p.m.
