Deadline to apply for 2018 Berlin events set for Sept. 1

(Aug. 24, 2017) The deadline to apply for 2018 events in downtown Berlin is just a week away.
Under the Town of Berlin policy adopted in June, events for the following year must be submitted between July 1 and Sept. 1. Only one event that requires town services may be scheduled per day.
Town Administrator Laura Allen said last week the town had not received as many applications as she had anticipated.
“We just want to make sure to let people know the process has changed and that we’re happy to have them apply. We just need them to submit their application by the first of September so it can be reviewed,” Allen said.
Economic and Community Development Director Ivy Wells said 2018 events hosted by the town, Calvin B. Taylor House Museum, Berlin Arts and Entertainment Committee and Berlin Chamber of Commerce had already been secured. That includes the Bathtub Races, Peach Festival, Fiddler’s Convention and Oktoberfest.
There is still space on the calendar, however, for additional events. The town does not limit the total number of events held each year, although it does cap the number of events that include the public sale and consumption of alcohol to six.
“I just want to make sure that the word gets out so everyone has a chance to be able to submit their proposed event for 2018, if they want to have an event downtown,” Wells said. “Sometimes someone is thinking about having an event and I just want to make sure that they know to come and see me before Sept. 1 so we can get the paperwork done.”
Wells said she is always looking for new ideas.
“I’m always looking to help nonprofits out, so I encourage the nonprofits to apply if they’re looking to hold an event downtown,” she said. “Right now, it looks like we’re going to have a pretty successful 2017, and we’re looking forward to all the existing events [returning] and all the new ones for next year.”
She added the policy only applies to events that require street closures or town services.
Forms can be submitted online through www.berlinmainstreet.com/ vendor-information or www.berlinmd. gov/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/ Special-Event-Form-0717.pdf.
Physical forms can be picked up at the Berlin Visitor’s Center on 14 South Main Street and must be submitted there by 4 p.m. on Sept. 1.
