Delmarva Discovery Center hosts gala, fundraiser, Saturday

(Sept. 15, 2016) Celebrating the years’ successes while keeping an eye on the future by raising money to increase accessibility and improve offerings for children are the goals of the Delmarva Discovery Center’s annual gala on Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m.
Tickets cost $50 per person, and will be available at the door, although advance ticket purchases are preferred. Tickets can be obtained in advance by calling the center at 410-957-9933 or visiting the website at www.delmarvadiscoverycenter.org, Stacey Weisner, president and CEO, said.
“I hope people come and see the excitement we’re generating at the Delmarva Discovery Center,” she said. “It’s a fundraiser and a ‘friendraiser’ — it’s to let people know what we’re doing. For many people it might be the first time they visit us.”
Last year was the first time the event was held on the DDC’s grounds in Pocomoke.
The gala will feature food from Phillips Seafood, My Nature raw and vegan dishes and Somerset County vocational and technical students, Weisner said.
She said the food qualifies as “heavy appetizers,” and desserts will also be available.
Each entry pass also comes with a premium drink ticket, with beer, wine and mixed drinks available. Attendees must be 21 years of age or older.
Weisner said business casual dress is appropriate for the event.
The gala will also feature a silent auction — a change from the previous, audible version, and entertainment by the Bone Daddy’s.
“We have some lovely silver and diamond earrings from the Robinson’s family of businesses, a stay in Ocean City, gift cards from several area businesses and golf packages,” she said.
Proceeds from the event are going back into the facility, Weisner said.
“We’re trying to make the Delmarva Discovery Center more universally accessible,” she said. The DDC has added ramps to the building, including the new river otter exhibit, and is focusing on retooling an existing room into a children’s area.
“The theme is birds — we want the kids to play like birds,” she explained. “It’s very hands-on, because we’ve found that those are the types of exhibits people really respond to here.”
The proposed children’s room will be located near the entrance but past the gift shop — where reptile and amphibian exhibits are now located. The animals, Weisner said, would be relocated within the facility to a separate area.
No schedule for the change has been announced.
