ESAM presents $45,000 to area nonprofit CFES

(Dec. 17, 2015) The Eastern Shore Association of Municipalities presented the Salisbury-based Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore with a $45,000 check during a dinner event at Stoked in Cambridge last Thursday.
Association President Lisa Hall said the nonprofit collected the money after hosting similar events and gathering donations over a period of several years.
“We decided to start an endowment at the Community Foundation because that’s the only organization that covers the whole territory that we’re all elected officials out of,” she said.
Hall said the endowment would support the Community Foundation’s annual “If I Were Mayor” contest, which awards a $1,000 scholarship to the grade-school winner of an essay contest.
“When they graduate from high school, they’ll be able to go to the Community Foundation and, no matter what technical school or college they chose, they’ll be able to get their $1,000 scholarship towards tuition or books,” Hall said.
Statewide winners, she added, would receive an additional $1,000 scholarship through the foundation.
“I just think it’s nice to encourage children at that age to start looking forward to the future,” Hall said. “I’m hoping it will encourage more participation in the contest.”
The association, which is the local chapter of the Maryland Municipal League, also hosted more than a dozen members of the Eastern Shore delegation during the dinner. Hall said many of those officials provided an overview of the upcoming legislative session, which starts in January.
