Fathom, Gilbert’s Provisions coming soon to dwtn. Berlin

(May 5, 2016) Two new – and very different – businesses are in development in downtown Berlin.
Both hope to add a vibrant, youthful atmosphere to the historic district, and both hope to open their respective doors this summer.
At 14 North Main Street, in the area formerly occupied by jj Fish Studio and Fine Craft Gallery, Hunter Smith and Devon Bostic will open Fathom.
The sisters, and Sea la Vie co-owners, have described the space as an “edgy” clothing store.
“Sea la Vie is our sweeter side – this is going to have a saltier feel,” Bostic said. “It’s going to have fashionable, trendy clothing.”
Smith said the new shop would have an “industrial” look, using the exposed brick of the old building to set it apart from other Berlin locales.
Fathom will carry clothing for men and women, and will focus on current name brands, including Stance and Joe Browns.
Construction is still underway and can clearly be seen from Main Street and at the rear entrance on Broad Street, but Smith and Bostic said a mid-late summer opening is likely.
On 25 Commerce Street, in the back of the building housing Bruder Hill, Chef Toby Gilbert will open Gilbert’s Provisions. The space was being used as storage overflow for Bruder Hill.
Gilbert is the son of NEST owner Dee Gilbert, and has led cutting-edge culinary efforts at Blacksmith in Berlin and at a(MUSE.) in Rehoboth.
He said weather, including snow and heavy rains, have caused multiple delays during the construction and renovation process, much of which he did himself.
“We’re not exactly where I want to be now, but we’re on our way,” he said. “I’ve got a whole lot of stuff just sitting at my house waiting to move in. As soon as we get electric and everything smoothed out, we can start going.”
Eventually, Gilbert said the shop, described as a “gourmet deli,” would carry everything from homemade ice cream, to fermented goods and exotic salts, including those by Jacobsen Salt Co.
He estimated Gilbert’s Provisions would open “before Memorial Day.”
“If we don’t open by then, it’s not going to be good,” Gilbert said, laughing dryly.
