First lease for Berlin Falls park? Return of Jeep Week

(May 5, 2016) Berlin Falls will soon experience a number of firsts, including the opening of the massive new park, albeit for passive use later this spring.
The park marked its first commercial lease agreement on April 25, during a mayor and council meeting at Town Hall.
Ocean City 4X4 LLC, which holds the annual Jeep Jam rally, will pay the town $4,000 to use the property for the event on Aug. 25-27. The agreement also covers Aug. 28.
Town Administrator Laura Allen said Berlin would receive full sponsorship rights and appear on promotional materials. Ocean City 4X4 would be responsible with providing portable bathrooms and trash pickup.
A local nonprofit will be chosen to provide food. No alcohol will be sold on the property during the event.
Allen said the contract also required the company to restore the property after the Jeeps run through the various obstacle courses. This year’s Jeep Jam will be the sixth.
“It’s an exciting event,” Hoffman said. “Last year, we did get national coverage in worldwide magazine called ‘JP Magazine,’ which was exciting for us as well.”
Hoffman said Jeep Jam would appeal to enthusiasts of four-wheeling, as well as to families, and would provide numerous economic benefits to the town.
“Throughout the weekend, if the wives are coming and they’re not into [the event], they’re out going to some of the restaurants and going out and doing some shopping,” he said. “It’s just been a great event for us, and it’s also, I think, a great event for the whole community.”
Town Attorney David Gaskill apparently reviewed the contract, and had no issues.
“We are excited that you all decided to come back to the town of Berlin, especially after the ownership of the property has changed,” Councilmember Dean Burrell said, drawing a laugh from the audience. His fellow councilmember, Troy Purnell, was part of an ownership group that sold the property to the town.
“You guys seem to be really good landlords, and so was the last one,” Hoffman said. “It’s an honor to have the event in Berlin once again.”
