BERLIN—The house was rocking as Gull Creek Senior Living Community hosted its first Silver Stars Senior Idol Contest on Nov. 14. Truck driver Charley Davis took home the top prize of $500 with renditions of Kenny Rogers’ “You Don’t Need Me,” and Marvin Gaye’s and Tammi Tyrell’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”
Regina Yankalunas won the $250 second place prize with classics from the play Phantom of the Opera, “All I Ask of You,” and Andrea Bocelli’s “The Prayer.” Dennis Crawford, who was visiting from Falls Church, Va., went home with the $100 third place prize. He crooned out “Dream Lover”—Bobby Darin’s not Mariah Carey’s thank you very much—and “Only You” by the Platters.
Garry White of Ocean Pines came in a respectable fourth place, earning himself a nice stash of casino bucks, which if he plays his cards right (pun intended) could result in topping all of his competitors combined. He started with Michael Bublé’s “Haven’t Met You Yet,” and attracted his own groupies with a rousing strain of Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Great Balls of Fire.”
Also competing were local landlord Tony Christ and Terry Beauchamp. They were all entertaining, but alas there were only four prizes to be awarded.
The judges were WBOC’s Delmarva Life host Brian Spyros, music therapist Cindy Truitt and Gull Creek’s own Herb Disharoon. The event was hosted by former Broadway performer Dawn Jones, with New Dawn bandmate Wayne Jones on keyboard for the non-karaoke performance part of the competitions.
“I was really pleased with the evening,” Event Coordinator Mari Bohall, said. “There was a lot of great talent and it was a lot of fun. Everybody had a good time.”
The event was one of four the organization hosts each year. It allows the general public to experience the community, food and residents in an effort to help change the perception about senior living environments.
On Wednesday, Dec. 18 the community with host an open dinner theater performance of the Bing Crosby classic “Holiday Inn.” Ticket cost $20. For more information call 410-641-3171, or visit www.gullcreek.org.
