It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James E. Welsch, of Bishopville, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated educator, who departed this life on June 23, 2026, at the age of 83. He was born on August 2, 1942, in Baltimore to the late John Welsch and Dorothy (Sommers) Welsch.

Jim was a retired athletic director for Howard County Public Schools, where he inspired countless students with his passion for sports and education. He was a proud member of the Friendship Church of Berlin, the Berlin/Ocean City Optimist Club, the Friendship Church of Berlin Men’s Group, and a Bible Study group, reflecting his dedication to community service and his faith.

James is survived by his wife, Anita R. Welsch; daughter, Jo Ann Huber (Phil); son, Jimmy Welsch (Elaine); grandchildren, Riley, Sarah, Drew, and Kaitlyn. Together, they will carry his legacy of kindness, strength, and leadership forward.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn Beachley.

A funeral service was held at the Friendship Church of Berlin. Entombment was at Granite Memorial Mausoleum on Worcester Highway in Bishopville.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN. 38105.
