Local churches unite to build church in the Galapagos Islands

BERLIN – Years ago, the beautiful
Galapagos Islands were made famous by Charles Darwin, who introduced the idea of evolution to the world.

In the wee hours, Wednesday morning Oct. 13, 37 Christians from two Berlin churches, The Worship Center and Sonrise Church, returned from a 10 day mission trip to Ecuador where they constructed a church building for the village of Santa Rosa in the Galapagos Islands.

The project was born during a similar venture last November to construct education facilities at the island’s mother church,

Hosanna
Christian
Center
. The missionary leader requested prayer for a group of believers who would certainly never have the funds to construct a church building themselves.

Overwhelmed with compassion, that group and others pledged to give of their abundance to support their brothers and sisters in Christ in the Galapagos. Interestingly, neither The Worship Center nor

Sonrise
Church
currently worship in a building of their own.

Bryan Pugner, pastor of the

Worship
Center
, said, "Only God deserves credit for what was accomplished in the Galapagos last week. He provided the land, the people, the passion, and the skills needed.”

Pastor Daryl McCready of

Sonrise
Church
agreed. "The uniting of two different denominations working together is truly a miracle in today’s times,” he said. “But God has united our hearts to accomplish His work, not only in the Galapagos, but here in

Berlin
. We believe that unity of Christ’s followers reflects a true picture of God’s kingdom.”

The two churches have worked together and with other area churches in and for the local communities on numerous occasions for years. “It’s what we’re all about,” said Pugner.
