Mar-Va Theater to present ‘Babes in Toyland’ this wknd.

(Dec. 8, 2016) Staging a live production of “Babes in Toyland” at the Mar-Va Theater in Pocomoke City is a true community effort, beginning with the cast and crew, but is also dependent on the audience coming out to see the show, according to Katy Fleming, executive director of the theater.
“We’re all trying to pull our weight. For all the work that goes into the production, it’s nice when you look out to have a full house looking back,” she said.
The play opens Friday night at 7 p.m., with another show set for on Saturday evening at the same time. A Sunday matinee will be offered at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 for VIP seating, which is located towards the front and center of the theater, and $15 for general admission. Tickets are $10 for seniors, children under 12 and active duty military personnel.
The cast, composed of more than 30 people from ages 2 and up, have been preparing for the performance since October, Fleming said. The troupe has been rehearsing the show twice weekly.
But that’s just the performers. Fleming and board member Christina Garrett have been working behind the scenes nearly every day as well to prepare sets, get costumes together and ensure everything goes off smoothly.
“Everything we do, except for me, is volunteer. Christina is working on the sets, directing the show and is in charge of the costumes too,” Fleming said.
Ever since the previous live performance at the theater, “Dracula,” which had a two-day run in late October, Fleming said she and Garrett have been at the theater nearly every day to make things right for the next show.
“We don’t want to leave a single piece out, because the entire puzzle suffers. This is a musical too, so it’s an extra challenge. So far, it’s coming together pretty well,” she said. “This is community theater, so a lot of the performers go up and down the shore looking for venues to perform. We have someone from Exmore, Virginia and someone’s coming down from Delmar, Delaware to be in the show.”
After Babes in Toyland’s run, Fleming said the next live show at the Mar-Va will be “Jesus Christ Superstar” in the spring.
