Michael Francis Higgins

Michael “Mike” Higgins, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on August 17, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Born in 1944 in Independence, Iowa, to Don and Cora Higgins, Mike showed an early aptitude for learning. He mastered typing in grade school, a skill that led to his assignment to the Pentagon during the Vietnam War.

Following his service, Mike began a long career with IBM, where he worked until his retirement in 1992. He later spent more than 30 years in real estate.

In 1983, Mike married Kathleen, the love of his life. Together they built a home in Ocean City, where they lived for more than 40 years.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; his children, Michael Higgins Jr. of Louisville, Kentucky, and Kevin Sean Higgins of Woodbridge, Virginia; and his grandchildren, Michael III of Knoxville, Tennessee, Kaitlyn and Hailey Higgins of Woodbridge, Virginia, and Matthew Higgins of Louisville, Kentucky.

Mike is also survived by his siblings Vince Higgins and Mary Breitbach of Iowa and Ron Higgins of Colorado. He was preceded in death by his brothers Thom Higgins and Sam Higgins.

A devoted community member, Mike served for many years as treasurer of the Delmarva Irish American Club and especially enjoyed participating in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

A lifelong sports fan, he faithfully followed the Washington Redskins, Washington Capitals, and Washington Nationals, sharing that enthusiasm with family and friends.

Mike and Kathleen had been preparing to move to Annapolis to be closer to family just weeks before his passing. Though that move did not come to be, his love and legacy remain deeply rooted in those he cherished.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Services will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church (208 S. Baltimore Avenue) in Ocean City, Maryland. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., and Mass will begin at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mike’s honor to St. Mary’s Star of the Sea/Holy Savior Church, Ocean City, Maryland.

He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
