Morrison holding lead over Williams in battle of mayors

(June 4, 2015) With just one day to go Pocomoke Mayor Bruce Morrison appears to be holding a lead over Berlin Mayor Gee Williams in the “Battle of the Mayors” leading up to Friday’s High Heel Races.
Both men, who will participate in a one-on-one race during the Berlin event, have been locked in an online fundraising battle during the last several weeks.
Websites were established to collect wagers on the winner, with the proceeds going to local nonprofit Women Supporting Women.
As of Wednesday Morrison had raised $626 to Williams’ $125. Votes cost a minimum of $1, with proceeds going to nonprofit Women Supporting Women.
The pair, admittedly old friends, have been involved in a heated war of words leading up to the showdown. This week Morrison expressed confidence in his victory, and worried about Williams’ ability to hold up during the race.
“I just want to make sure that Gee is going to be okay because I know his age,” he said. “He’s a little older than me, and I’m just concerned about his knees popping out or him falling and getting hurt, that he won’t be able to run his town. I might have to go and run two towns.”
Williams fired back on Tuesday.
“My wife bought me a new pair of heels so they’ll compensate for the old bones,” he said. “We’ll see what prevails here – new heels or old bones – but I’m going to bet on the new heels.”
Morrison, for his part, admitted he had been practicing for the race – after dark.
“I’ve got bad knees, but I think I have a pair of shoes that aren’t too bad. I went out the other night in the dark and ran down the street a little ways, and I did all right.
“I’m excited about it,” Morrison continued. “It looked like a fun thing, and the main thing is it’s a good cause. That’s why I’m doing it.”
