Nearly 40 artists to take part in annual Paint Berlin event

(Sept. 21, 2017) The annual Paint Berlin event returns this week, Sept. 20-23, with its largest number of participants yet and an expanded painting area that includes Ayer’s Creek and Assateague.
Arts Council Executive Director Anna Mullis said a welcome reception was held Wednesday for the 37 artists who registered – three more than last year.
“A lot of artists return year after year, but we have more and more new artists coming,” she said. “Those who are new will get to learn about the hospitality of Berlin and how welcoming we are here. That’s one of the reasons it’s so popular.”
Throughout the week, guests in Berlin are likely to see artists setting up easels downtown and in surrounding areas, painting plein air, or outdoors and under natural light.
Paint Berlin culminates with a sale and exhibition at the Worcester County Arts Council building on 6 Jefferson Street in Berlin on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Mullis said Sen. Jim Mathias, Del. Mary Beth Carozza and Mayor Gee Williams all confirmed they would attend the exhibition, which will feature for the first time a legislator’s award chosen by elected officials.
Additional prizes will include first place ($1,000), second place ($500), third place ($100), honorable mention ($100) and artist’s choice ($100). Berlin resident Kirk McBride will judge the show.
“Our board of directors and bunch of volunteers and I are so excited,” Mullis said. “It’s fresh from the easel, so we call it ‘wet paint sale and exhibit’ because a lot of pieces of art work are just completed. Everybody can mingle with the artists and share in their experience. It’s a really fun time.”
Mullis also thanked sponsors the Town of Berlin, Salt Water Media, and the Joan W. Jenkins Foundation.
