(May 5, 2016) Bruder Hill in Berlin is reusing old clothing in sort of a rags-to-charitable-giving program as part of its new “BH Project.”
In February, Owner Shelly Bruder commissioned Marla Roberts to create a line of “upcycled” pillows made from used clothing or fabrics, from old sweaters to gently worn denim.
The price of each item ranges from $14 dollars to about of $40.
“It’s all made of upcycled clothing or fabric, so it won’t ever be any kind of new fabric,” Bruder said. “We don’t like to waste things – we don’t want them to go into the trash. We like to give back by using old stuff that’s not going to be used.”
Half of the proceeds produced from the pillows will benefit a local nonprofit. Currently, that’s Worcester County G.O.L.D., (Giving Other Lives Dignity) Inc., a Snow Hill organization that provides financial aid to families in crises and children living in foster care.
“They always do this Easter basket drive for underprivileged children, so we figured this would be a great time to do [the promotion] for them,” Bruder said. “And we love what they do – they foster children and families that really need help. They do good things for families, and for people that don’t have families.”
Bruder said she hoped to cycle through several beneficiaries, switching causes a few times each year.
“I want to be able to make some money for the charities, so I’m thinking of changing every four-to-six months,” she said.
The next nonprofit to benefit from the promotion will be the Shirley Grace Pregnancy Center in Berlin, an organization that offers “unconditional support for anyone facing a crisis or unintended pregnancy.”
Bruder Hill is located at 25 Commerce Street in downtown Berlin.
