BERLIN–The Berlin Parks
Commission announced that prizes will be offered to all students whose images
are selected for the Stephen Decatur Park Mural Contest.
Sponsors supporting the
contest will fund the prizes, said Mary Bohlen, town staff liaison to the Parks
Commission.
The commission is still seeking
sponsors for the contest and will not be able to determine exactly how the
prizes will be awarded until a later date. They also continue to seek original
artwork from area students enrolled in grades 9-12.
The winning artwork will be
used to compose a mural in Stephen Decatur Park, replacing the existing mural
located behind the tennis courts.
Volunteer judges and a
professional muralist are also needed.
Students are asked to submit
no more than three original images depicting single elements representative of
Berlin.
The contest will be open
until 5 p.m., Monday, Dec. 2. Once entries are narrowed, the park commission
hopes to display them during a Second Friday Arts Stroll in Berlin for public
input. The Parks Commission will also be working to enlist the aid of a
professional muralist to develop the final mural design.
