Reception to open Arts Council Sept. exhibit at gallery

BERLIN–The Worcester County Arts Council has announced the September exhibit, featuring newest, fresh-off the-easel paintings by local artist and council member, David J. Simpson.
The opening “Meet the Artist” reception, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Friday, Sept. 12 from 5-8 p.m. at the Arts Council Gallery located on 6 Jefferson Street in Berlin.
The exhibit will be on display until Sept. 30. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday and some Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Simpson was born and raised in Ocean City and now he and his wife, Cristina own the very house he grew up in. In 1999 he reconnected with the art world at Salisbury University, where he achieved both a philosophy degree and a fine arts degree in painting.
The subjects in the oil paintings he create traditionally are focused on the human figure, landscapes and seascapes. Most recently, his paintings have focused on the elements of texture, color and light via seascapes. In the spring of 2012, Simpson graduated with Masters in the Art of Teaching from University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Simpson is showing work locally at community art organizations, winning awards and teaching private lessons. In addition, he recently became a board member for the Worcester County Arts Council and currently holds the office of treasurer.
As an adjunct professor, Simpson said he is thoroughly happy to be able to professionally contribute to the promising art community at UMES.
“Making art and promoting the growth of the arts in our local community is something I truly believe in,” he said.
The Worcester county Arts Council  is supported by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive. An agency of the Department of Business & Economic Development, the MSAC provides financial support and technical assistance to nonprofit organizations, units of government, colleges and universities for arts activities.
Funding for the Maryland State Arts Council is also provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
