Sept. 19 Thank a Police Officer Day

(Sept. 10, 2015) Sept. 19 is National Thank a Police Officer Day, which was established to show appreciation and support for local law enforcement agencies and officers.
Locally, several satellite locations will be collecting donations and rallying support for the occasion.
“There is a public event encouraging everyone to get involved in appreciation for their local police, and then there is a small group for the planning for Delmarva locations,” organizer Andrea Baumann said. “We have team captains who be handling each delivery and we are asking the public to join in by filling cards with messages of support to be distributed across the area.”
Baumann said regional push began with 14 locations and has now expanded to nearly 40, with the goal of covering every police department in Worcester, Wicomico, Somerset and Sussex counties.
“Any cards with positive messages of support and ‘thank you’ are perfect,” she said. “These can be small cards, big cards, plain or ones that say thank you. Have lots of people write in each one, or get your friends, coworkers or civic clubs together for a card-making and writing event.”
Cards must be dropped off no later than Sept. 16, and should not be sealed.
Additional suggestions include anonymously buying coffee or a meal for an officer, delivering a tray of baked goods or a fruit basket, posting an encouraging message on local business billboards, or tying a blue ribbon of support in your front yard.
In Berlin, Dimitra Douglas was given the task of collecting donations.
“I started my own event to reach out to my friends to write cards and buy treats so we could have a lot,” she said, adding that Bike Week would require a strong state police presence in the area.
“Thank a Police Officer Day is important to me because I feel that quite often people forget that police officers are people too,” Douglas said. “I think this small act of gratitude reminds the public that cops are human and shows law enforcement that we do appreciate the job that they do.”
Local drop-off locations include Minuteman Press on 829 East William Street in Salisbury, the Sports Core Pool on 11143 Cathell Road in Ocean Pines, ACE Printing on 10026 Old Ocean City Boulevard, Suite 3, in Berlin and Brandywine Senior Living on 21111 Arrington Drive in Selbyville.
