Showell Street meeting half successful

BERLIN– Town officials attempted to meet on Monday with a pair of residents near the corner of Showell and Flower streets, which is affected by stormwater runoff. They made it halfway.
“One resident was available,” Town Administrator Laura Allen said. “The other wasn’t ready to meet yet.”
District 4 Councilmember Dean Burrell had warned that a ditch running parallel to Showell Street was becoming unstable. The mayor and council asked that plans to address stormwater concerns in Berlin include those homes, and Burrell asked the town to follow up with residents who had voiced concerns.
Allen said the meeting, “addressed their concerns regarding Hudson Branch, which runs behind their homes.
“Specifically they wanted to discuss flooding and erosion of their property and understand to what extent the town’s stormwater management project is going to address those issues,” she said. “The town committed to continuing the maintenance of the ditch in their backyards four times a year and stabilize the bank by lining it and placing stone over the lining. We also explained the benefits of the stormwater management project on Flower Street.”
Berlin received nearly $2 million in grants for new stormwater improvements this year from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Natural Resources and the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development’s Community Development Block Grant program. The grants expire in 2016, meaning construction would likely begin soon.
The three phases of upgrades include Flower Street, Williams Street and Cedar, Franklin, Maple, Grice and Nelson streets.
Allen said the town phoned the second resident, who was not present during the meeting, to reschedule.
