SNOW HILL– Snow Hill’s answer to Pork in the Park returns this weekend for its second year.
The Pig & a Jig BBQ Festival will be held May 30-31 on Rt. 113 just north of Snow Hill. The KCBS sanctioned competition includes live music, carnival rides by Shaw Amusement Rides, craft vendors, beer and wine and, of course, plenty of barbeque.
Sandy Fulton, originator of Pork in the Park, created Pig & a Jig after retiring from the Wicomico County Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.
“A friend of mine who was president of the Snow Hill PTA was looking for a fundraiser and she wondered if I had any ideas,” she said. “I said, ‘well, we could try a barbeque festival.’ We did a small one last year – it was just a few amateurs – and it really went well and it raised quite a bit of money for the children, so I volunteered my time again.”
More than 6,000 attended the inaugural event. Pig & a Jig will be officially sanctioned for the first time this year, meaning competition is likely to heat up.
“It was a surprise how well the first year went over,” Fulton said. “Snow Hill and the children and the schools did a great job. Snow Hill Auto Body, that’s owned by Preston, supported it financially, so it was able to make money.
“This year we have food vendors, we have craft vendors, we have bands, beer, amateur barbeque, and then of course the pros will be here,” Fulton continued. “We’re going to have a total of 40 competitors, which is good because that’s all the space we have.”
The event is 100 percent nonprofit, with all proceeds going towards area schools.
“We’re raising money for projects that the Snow Hill teachers need and the students need that the budget just can’t handle,” Fulton said. “This is our way of helping the schools. This is a great example of what a small town can do when they put their heads and their minds together. It’s not the end of the world because budgets are cut – you just have to get people out there to try to help. People can make a difference.
“I want to see Snow Hill go on the map,” Fulton continued. “It’s a wonderful little town, and hopefully this event will bring people into the area.”
