Social Services, Merril Lynch aid flood victims

(Sept. 7, 2017) The Worcester County Department of Social Services and Merrill Lynch in Ocean City are spearheading one of a multitude of local and national efforts to ship supplies to assist people and pets impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
Kirby Brewington, with social services, said donations are being accepted through Sept. 11 at numerous locations in Snow Hill, along with Pocomoke and Ocean City. After hearing of Merrill Lynch’s efforts to line up tractor trailers, Brewington jumped onboard to help fill the vehicles with sorely needed items.
In addition to canned and nonperishable foods, organizers are requesting bedding, toiletries, paper products and clothing.
Drop off sites include Worcester County Department of Social Services, 299 Commerce Street; Worcester County Bureau of Child Support, 424 West Market Street; Harvest Moon Tavern, 108 West Green Street; and Bomshell Boutique, 12216 Ocean Gateway in Ocean City.
Pocomoke Animal Hospital, 1139 Ocean Highway, is also collecting items to assist pets impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
Items sought include: canned or dry food for cats and dogs, treats, toys, food bowls, litter/litter pans, kennels or crates, leashes and collars, and bedding and towels. horse supplies are also being collected.
Like many who witnessed footage of the devastation in Houston and Louisiana, Leia Dudek, Pocomoke Animal Hospital receptionist technician, wanted to lend aid. Along with Amy Manelski, officer manager, Dudek attempted to contact the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in both states.
“We didn’t hear from either and then we saw something on Facebook about Social Services filling a truck,” she said.
After making contact with Brewington, both Dudek and Manelski were happy to lead the charge to aid much beloved pets.
“We can’t go down … so we did the next best thing,” she said.
