(May 10, 2018) A Berlin man on Thursday was taken into police custody and charged in connection with a fatal hit and run that occurred Sunday near Berlin.

Interim States Attorney Bill McDermott said Thursday afternoon that Jonathan Torin Kidder, 59, of Berlin, was charged with DUI homicide, DWI homicide, DUI, DWI, and negligent driving stemming from an incident that claimed the life of Eduardo Madrid, 38, of Berlin.

According to the Maryland State Police, a car collided with a bicycle near Route 589 and Gum Point Road on Sunday. Troopers from the Berlin barrack responded shortly after 10 p.m. and the bicyclist, identified as Madrid, was taken to Atlantic General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said the driver of the car, Kidder, fled the scene.

McDermott said Kidder turned himself into police on Thursday. According to McDermott, he successfully asked the district court commissioner to hold kidder without bond. A hearing was scheduled for Friday.

State police said investigative assistance was provided by local agencies including the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Ocean City Police Department, Delaware State Police, Berlin Fire Department, and Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration.
