Suzanne Timmons enters 13th year in downtown Snow Hill

(Sept. 1, 2016) Sure, Suzanne Timmons admits, there are days when it might not seem worth it.
Certainly there are days when she counts the money she could be making by opening a second location in a busier town, or by simply up and moving The Sassy Girl Boutique from Green Street to other, busier places.
“I’ve had offers and have been approached to bring my shop to other places,” she said. “Although it’s tempting, this town is special to me and I’ve seen its potential.”
That her husband, Kevin, was born and raised in Snow Hill is but one of the reasons.
“I’ve always enjoyed Snow Hill as a quaint, quiet town. I enjoy the people. We have a downtown that’s friendly for pedestrians,” she said. “I think I’ve always enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere.”
But, there are consequences.
“I’m well aware that from an economic or bank account standpoint, I could be making more money,” Timmons said. “But I have so many people in town that support me.”
Besides, she adds, she makes a living.
“So many people want to see the town survive and grow,” she said. “It makes me feel proud.”
As it stands, Timmons is one of the people who have worked to make Snow Hill survive and grow the longest. She opened her original shop, Lost in the Country, in 2003 just down the block from where Sassy Girl now is. In October, she’ll be celebrating her 13th year in business.
“In 2009 when the economy bottomed out I needed to reinvent or close,” she said.
That’s when Sassy Girl was born.
She began focusing on a broader spectrum of products, trying to draw more women through her door. She added more gifts, she added more signs — she began adding customers.
“I typically have some sort of special for First Friday,” she said — this week’s offering is a 25 percent discount on all Lindsay Phillips shoes, but her big fall open house is next week, Sept. 9-10, which is when holiday season starts for Timmons.
“September through December is the busiest time of my year, and I look forward to refreshing the store and changing things up.”
Timmons has just returned from a buying trip, and is ready to start selling.
New handbags, new jewelry and scarves, new soaps and lotions — and almost a new Sassy Girl.
“I’m really just super excited about the direction the town is going in, especially with the addition of Michael Day — there’s untapped adventure here in Snow Hill,” she said.
“I’m very hopeful — as usual.”
