Wet shave groups will hold meet-up in Berlin, March 19

(March 10, 2016) Two different hobbyist groups formed via Facebook are gathering in Berlin on March 19 for the first East Coast Wet Shave Meet-up.
East Coast Wetshavers and the Culinary Institute of Shaving will gather at The Globe in Berlin from 1-5 p.m., for a day of demonstrations, camaraderie – and maybe a little shopping.
“Instead of just the everyday average shave, these guys collect vintage razors, brushes, and shave soaps from artisans,” said Jon Conley, beard enthusiast and owner of Uncle Jon’s Soaps in Berlin.
Conley said the event came together when a member of one of the groups, Frank Misa from the Culinary Institute of Shaving, offered to come down from New York and give him a lesson on honing and stropping straight razors. When the moderator of East Coast Wetshavers heard about it, he suggested a meeting.
“All of sudden, we had an event,” Conley said. “We fully expect 20-25 people, and we’re going to split them into groups and show them around town.”
One group will watch a honing demonstration presented by Misa at The Globe, where guests will be able to order off the menu. The second group will get a soap-making lesson inside Conley’s shop on 12 Williams Street.
The session will also include several raffles and giveaways, including vintage razors, strops and artisan soaps and aftershaves.
Several members of the two groups have already booked rooms at the Atlantic Hotel and the Waystead Inn, and Conley said he hopes the event will drive a few dozen extra people into Berlin shops during an otherwise slow part of the year.
“We figured it would be a good way to get people into town in March, a little ahead of the spring curve, hopefully,” he said. “It helps me, it helps their groups, it gives them all a chance to put faces with names, and maybe it helps the town a little bit.”
Conley added that the event is free and open to the public, and not limited to members of the respective Facebook groups. To RSVP, contact Conley by Monday, March 14 at unclejonssoap@gmail.com, or visit www.unclejonssoap.com.
