Youth Fishing Derby casts off, Sat.

(Sept. 21, 2017) Police Chief Tom Davis is casting a wide net for the Snow Hill Youth Fishing Derby, Saturday, Sept. 23 from 9:30 -11:30 a.m. in Byrd park.
During the Snow Hill Council meeting last Monday, Davis said several police officers would be on hand to help youngsters with the finer points of angling, like baiting hooks or casting lines.
“It’s been well planned out by [Town Manager] Kelly [Pruitt] and [Assistant town Manager] Trish [Goodsell],” he said. “It should be a very good community event.”
Now in its fourth year, the free event is broken down into three age groups: 7 and under, 8-10 and 11-14. A parent or guardian over the age of 21 must accompany participants.
All who take part will receive a goody bag. Door prizes of fishing gear will also be awarded. No fishing license is required for youths to take part.
Goodsell said a limited amount of fishing tackle would be available. Adults are encouraged to provide their children with gear, if possible.
An awards ceremony and lunch hour is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m.
Awards will be given for the first catch in each age category, as well as trophies for the largest and smallest catch. Lunch includes hot dogs and chips.
The Ocean City – Berlin Optimist Club sponsors the annual event.
“We have giveaways and prizes just like we did last year,” Davis said. “We’re expecting it to be a pretty fun time.”
On-site registration starts at 9 a.m. For more information, call 410-632-2080.
