Worcester County Democrats may have had the blues Tuesday, but the county’s Republicans rode a wave of scarlet fever on election day to give the county its first all-GOP state delegation in years, and maybe ever.

Once a Democratic stronghold — albeit conservative Democrats — the county has sent Republicans to the State Senate and the House of Delegates before, but not in all seats at the same time.

It followed the same pattern of most Eastern Shore counties, where a majority of the voting population, on either side of the aisle, is much more conservative than its counterparts in suburban and metropolitan areas of the state.

How that will affect the legislative process as regards measures affecting the county will be interesting to follow, especially considering that Worcester voters will be sending two highly capable people from this end of the county, Senator-elect Mary Beth Carozza and Delegate-elect Wayne Hartman, to Annapolis in January.

On the county level, however, it will be business as usual. Party affiliation isn’t a real factor in county government, as all the county commissioners tend to be fiscally conservative.

Additionally, as was noted previously, voters couldn’t really go wrong no matter who they elected to the board of commissioners.

We congratulate them on their election to office, just as we congratulate Carozza, Hartman and Otto, and hope for a productive next few years.

Now that these races are over, it’s time to forget the campaigns and get down to working on behalf of all citizens of Worcester County.
